5 March, 2018 by Debra

Use constructive versus restrictive motivation to reach your goals.Motivation is a consistent issue with many writers. I write about it on my blog and hear about it at writers’ conferences I attend.

Guess what? even yours truly has issues at times.

Let’s start by setting the foundation with what motivation really is. [Read more…] about Are You Undermining Your Motivation to Write? Change Your Self-Talk

The 2 P’s Every Writer Needs: Patience and Perseverance

4 September, 2017 by Debra

Every writer needs to develop patience and perseverance.

You submitted your manuscript to several publishers simultaneously. But that was 3 months ago and you haven’t heard a word.

You submitted your book to a contest, but winners won’t be announced for another 6 months.

Then after all that waiting you get nothing but rejection letters and your contest entry didn’t even make the short list.

Disappointing to say the least… [Read more…] about The 2 P’s Every Writer Needs: Patience and Perseverance

7 Ways to Overcome Discouragement

7 August, 2017 by Debra

I can do this! With God, all things are possible.

You want to get published.

You want to get your book to the best seller lists.

Maybe you’d just like to see your book sales adding up and receive a decent royalty check every month.

But it isn’t happening. Instead you find yourself in a daily battle with the big D—discouragement.

So what do you do? I’m well acquainted with the emotion and have developed a few weapons to wield… [Read more…] about 7 Ways to Overcome Discouragement

When Your Motivation Goes Missing

17 April, 2017 by Debra

dog dressed in shirt and headphones no motivationAnother April-shower day glares at me through the office window. The same pile of papers on the floor stares up at me. The business paperwork on my desk demands attention.

It all conspires against me, and I want to flee to the comfort of the couch, a cup of coffee, and a mind-numbing DVD.

Because I’m self-employed, I can give in to this lack of motivation for a day. I justify it by telling myself I deserve a day off. But then a day becomes two and then three, and before I know it, those days have become a week and sometimes more.

Most of the time, the routine of my life causes this problem. Work, eat, sleep. Work, eat, sleep.

Do you ever have days like that? Weeks maybe? [Read more…] about When Your Motivation Goes Missing

8 Scriptures to Motivate You for Your Day

24 January, 2017 by Debra

dog dressed in shirt and headphonesI don’t know about you, but during the long dark days of winter, I can get a bit down and unmotivated. Doctors call it seasonal affective disorder (SAD). I counter this gloominess with white Christmas lights in my bedroom that come on at 5 a.m. to simulate sunrise. I also take extra B complex during the winter.

You may not combat SAD, but I don’t know of any writer who doesn’t suffer from a lack of motivation at one time or another. Sitting down to write can be tough sometimes when your project is giving you problems. So today, I thought I’d post some of my favorite Bible verses that help me get motivated for my day—writing or otherwise. [Read more…] about 8 Scriptures to Motivate You for Your Day

My Top 3 Tips for Self-Motivation

26 July, 2016 by Debra

I can do this! With God, all things are possible.

Mondays.

The hardest day of the week for me and many others. For most because they face getting up and going to the 9-5 job. Yes, I have to get up, but I only have to walk 6 feet from my bed to my office desk. How great is that!

Whether you leave home for work or not, Mondays are about motivation. I look at my weekly calendar of scheduled work and can too easily feel overwhelmed. Especially if I’m not seeing any results with the work I’ve been doing.

For writers working a day job and writing at night (or in the early hours before work), it’s finding motivation to [Read more…] about My Top 3 Tips for Self-Motivation
