Why does Debra L. Butterfield call herself the motivational editor?
Because she’s passionate about motivating other writers in their journey to publication. For over 15 years, fear and doubt about her abilities stopped her from even trying to be a writer. She doesn’t want that to happen to you.
Debra L. is here to help you
- Get results
- Have fun during the journey
- Find the right publishing path
- Keep the process orderly
Every writer starts in the same place: as beginners. Debra’s writing career started at Focus on the Family in 2002 as a junior copywriter and account/project manager for their in-house ad agency. In 2006 she began freelance writing and published her first book in 2007. She began freelance editing in 2010. She became an editor for CrossRiver Media in 2014, and in 2019 became their editorial director. Her editorial work with CrossRiver includes many award-winning books. Debra L. stepped down from her role with CrossRiver in October 2024 to dedicate more time to her own writing and editing business.
Debra is the mother of three adult children (each born in a different decade and different state, how fun is that!) and two grandchildren. She is a Marine Corps veteran (served from 1974 to 1977), is widely traveled, and lived in Germany from 1987 to 1991.
All her life experiences help her to be a better writer and editor so she can help you make your book the best it can be.
She is a graduate of the Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers Guild Apprentice program (2009) and CLASSeminar, and has taught workshops at the Write to Publish and Florida Christian writers conferences, as well as other smaller conferences.
