Let’s Talk Research

Doing research for your book

Research. Some writers love it, some don’t, but with nonfiction (and fiction), it is a critical part of your writing.

Readers won’t hesitate to tell you when your facts are wrong. That damages your credibility, and that reader might put down your book the moment they spot an inaccuracy. When I started book one, I visited the Montana tourist bureau online and requested items they offered for free. I got more than I expected, and it included a detailed map of Montana that I have referenced many times as I’ve been writing.

So this prompts the question, How do you do book research?

Don’t Make These Mistakes in Doing Research

6 February, 2017 by Debra

Today’s my birthday, so I decided to take the day off and have my friend Donna Wittlif guest post. I first met Donna through an online group I belong to and then had the opportunity to edit one of her books—fascinating sci-fi.

She is a retired special education and English teacher who loves writing. Her World Eternal series are science fiction/religious stories for young adults and adults.

Mistakes in Doing Research

When writers are working on a book, [Read more…] about Don’t Make These Mistakes in Doing Research

Research: Why It Matters to Your Novel

Research: Why it matters to your novel

CrossRiver Media recently accepted a second book (working title Where Destiny Awaits) from author Catherine Ulrich Brakefield. She and I connected last month at the Omaha Wordsowers writers conference, at which time she handed me a half-inch thick folder of research documents—complete with an official map of Tennessee, where her story takes place.

I could have hugged her. (Maybe only an editor can feel that way about research.) [Read more…] about Research: Why It Matters to Your Novel
